Thorpeness was created by local landowner Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie in the early 1900s as a resort for wealthy Edwardians, today vistors still come, atrracted by the Meare (large boating lake), Golf Course, Tennis Courts and of course the Sea. Walking, Birdwatching, and cycling are popular local pastimes.

Nearby towns include Aldeburgh,Snape,Woodbridge,Orford,Framlingham,Leiston,Dunwich and Walberswick.
